A Morning Prayer

A Morning Prayer

Posted: 05 Jun 2010 01:01 AM PDT

by Katherine Kehler

Lord, little by little You are getting through my befuddled mind to teach me another practical concept about living a life pleasing to You.

Lord Jesus, I know You said that in this world we would have troubles, but for some reason, I really thought there would be fewer problems as I aged, that I would become wise. But life becomes more complicated.

I wonder, Lord, is it because You need to constantly remind us that this earth is not our home…that we are heaven bound?

So many times I forget that people, circumstances or things cannot give me happiness; only You can. I realize now that my discouragement can be because of the lack of trusting You.

This day, Lord, I pray that You will enable me to trust You each time a problem arises. Whenever I get stressed, remind me to turn my eyes on You and Your sufficiency.
My help comes from You, Lord. Amen.

3 weeks till d-day...let the countdown begin!!!

I posted these pics on Facebook a few weeks ago, but forget that some of you aren't on there. I think it was a 35 week Baby Bump. Yippee, though, because we're in the home stretch! Just three weeks left until we're holding sweet little John Paul in our arms! The c-section is scheduled for Friday, June 18th at 7:45am. We'll be arriving at the hospital by 5:30am that morning to be "prepped" for surgery. I'm finally at peace with another c-section, and just thankful the outcome has always been a healthy baby and healthy me to care for all these sweet men in my life...even if it takes a little longer to get back on my feet than if I were to have been able to go more naturally!
The boys have definitely caught on that something BIG is about to happen and have BOTH been super-clingy to mommy lately! I say that emphatically because up until this year, James really could have cared less if I was in the room. He's always preferred Aaron (or his Pops) to me, and I have to admit I've kind of liked the favoritism a little bit these days...but I'm definitely running out of room on my lap for all these precious baby boys! They both tried to climb on my stomach tonight while we were reading our Bible story, and it was pretty much a failed attempt. James got to sit, while Noah just stood there climbing my arm and crying as I tried to read.

I'm still much smaller than I was with either of the other two, but John Paul is following suit and coming in big during his weekly measurements. I was losing weight for a few weeks, but had a little growth spurt at my 36 week check-up on Tuesday and had gained 2 1/2 pounds. It's all baby, though, because he was once again measuring two weeks ahead at 38 weeks! Most people think I've dropped, but I don't feel it. I think he's taking up every inch of space he has in my short torso, and it's really starting to hurt a little!

It also seems that he's going to be stubborn like Noah was, because nothing is happening...if you know what I mean! Dr. K said if I had my babies naturally, I'd probably be one of those poor women who at 44 weeks would still be waiting it out just hoping and praying! That sounds about right, seeing as my mom had everyone of us on or after our due dates (with the exception of sweet Katie who was her only c-section baby three days early!) Mark was the longest wait arriving a full week late, but he made it in time for the official New Year's Eve tax cut! (It was 10pm at night and like 5 others before him, he was born at home. We called everyone we knew before midnight to make sure there were plenty of witnesses to be approved for that beloved tax cut!)

Once again, everything is ready long before the due date, so now we just sit and wait. Bags are packed. Check. Nursery is clean and freshened up with a new monogram painting by my mom. Check. Car seat, baby swing, all baby clothes, and pumping equipment have been washed, sterilized and put in place. Check, check, check, and check. Diapers are in baskets ready for those 10 or so daily changes (and that doesn't even include the other 10 split between James & Noah!) Check. Grocery/Coupon clipping/shopping and stock-piling are complete (even got a new deep freeze for the garage!) Housekeeper and summer sitter are hired (and are fabulous!) Double check!! (P.S. We saved for both of those way back in December when we woke up from the shock of being pregnant with our 3rd in less than three years, and had a panic moment of reality knowing both our families lived out-of-town!)

Okay, so I'm a little OCD and overly-prepared (you should have seen the email I sent out to family and a few close friends about the birth weekend! I'm sure they think I'm crazy!) BUT, that's what makes me feel like we can do this! Of course, I fully realize that none of this is possible without God's guidance and overall control in every area of our lives...especially this (and yes, I am fully aware that we're still in for an incredible ride!) I'm still praying that the activity inside my womb bears no indication of this sweet baby's personality (ere I say, busyness...) on the outside! He's NEVER stopped moving, and I never dreamed it possible that any child could possess more energy that that of his older brother Noah!

...let the countdown begin!!!!!

Jesus Recycles

Jesus Recycles

Posted: 01 May 2010 01:01 AM PDT

By Idelette McVicker

And this is the will of him who sent me that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. John 6: 39 (NIV)

I took a picture of the recycling truck in our neighborhood a few days ago. “Transforming waste to resources,” reads the sign on the side. It reminds me so much of Jesus.

So often we see the experiences, mistakes and sins in our life as plain garbage. We want to leave it on the side of life’s road and see it disappear into forgetting. Jesus, however, wants to take our waste and is ready to transform it into resources for others who need to know that He meets us and loves us, even in our messiest moments.

In the hands of Jesus, our wasted experiences and the lessons we learn along the way can become a message. If only we would turn our hearts towards Him. As soon as we hold out our garbage to Him, He recycles it into resources and transforms us into His likeness.

Reflect:
Is there anything in your life you need to put out for Jesus to recycle?

Jesus, I love that You can transform even my smelliest garbage into something to serve another person’s heart. I place it all before You. Thank You for Divine recycling and transformation. With You, nothing is wasted.

grateful.

We had a 4D Ultrasound done of John Paul on Monday, April 19th. It is amazing how well these pics turned out...even better than James' and Noah's 4D's. He looks so much like Noah now in some of the photos! We already love this sweet boy as much as we love our other two precious sons! It amazes me daily how blessed we are by our gracious God!

It has been a sad week for us...as one of Aaron's colleagues lost his 6 month old baby girl to SIDS on Saturday morning. We mourn the loss of this sweet baby with them, and realize how so often we take lightly the gifts God has given us. Our daily struggles, frustrations and complaints of managing the "Terrible 2's," "Ornery 1's," and constant juggling of two babies while very pregnant are put into perspective when such a tragedy occurs! I've tried to enjoy every moment with my sweet babies this week (snotty noses and all!) They are such an answer to many years of prayer, and although we will face our daily "battles" I'd never trade my job as their mother and Aaron's wife for any other! Thank you, Lord, for blessing me so abundantly!

it's a sign...

my father-in-law saw this today.

being the ridiculously plan-ahead type of person i am, i just sent an email detailing our "birth plan" this week to all our family and a few friends (yes, i'm not even 28 weeks yet!)

i like to be organized and ready...even if the plan changes! :)
i have my 28 week appointment tomorrow, at which i'll schedule john paul's birthday....june 18th (my grandmother & sister Rebecca's birthday!) i'm thrilled for him to share his birthday with two amazing women in my family, and it was just a nice day to plan for family to come up since it's a friday. when the opportunity allows, i try to plan things around them since they have a ways to travel...this just happened to be one of those times it worked out well.
of course, anything is up for change...who knows what this little guy & God have planned? can't wait to find out...81.5 days to go till the c-section! :)
(i promise next post will include some pics of james & noah...i'm soooooooooooooo behind on posting about my sweet "big" boys!!!!!)

I Will War for You

Thank you, Father for this needed reminder!

I Will War for You

Posted: 11 Mar 2010 12:01 AM PST

by: Margaret C Mullings

I will war for you when you are weak
and can't go on.
Giving to you renewed strength.

I will war for you when people
are slandering you, with words
and assassinating your character

I will war for you, that you will
not get stuck in the mud.

I will war for you maintaining your integrity
for you were born to win, to soar above
the storms of life.
Yes I will carry your pain, humiliation
and all of your shame.

I will war so that you will live above sin.

I will war for you to continue to display
My love, embracing each hurting soul
whose path you cross, in spite
of the false accusers.

I will war for you, fighting your battles
giving to you the victories, and ushering
you into My presence where you will find
joy beyond measure.

I will war for you, you are my Choice Vessel
whom I have chosen, to display my love
to a hurting world filled with pain.

I will war for you, I love you so much
that I sacrificed My only Son Jesus Christ
to die in your place
so that you can live daily abundantly
free from the ravages of sin.

Always remember Jehovah Gibbor will arise
to war for you, through Jesus Christ
your Intercessor, your High Priest.
The Lamb who died for you.

Signed: Your Abba Father who loves you
unconditionally!!!!!!

Remember Whose You Are

And just as doubt began creeping back in......

Why is it so hard to feel like I fit in? Maybe because I don't and I'm not supposed to? I have been seeking an answer to this question since grade school, and just when I thought I finally had it all together it starts nagging at me again. I thought once I was married and had children and a beautiful house and family that I'm proud of, things would start to change. Guess what, they don't! None of that can fulfill the void, the longing, the need to be accepted.

My husband is a gem in a dirty, dusty world and my children bring me endless hours of unspeakable joy....but something still hurts and aches inside. Why do we care what others think of us? Why do I place so much importance in it? I'm trying so hard to do good and maintain a servant's heart, but I'm always second-guessing myself.

A friend recently told me, "You are to do all things for Christ. He's the one you're living for, not anyone but Him." Oh, how I need to remember that each day!

Now if I could just get the pesty little voice inside my head that tells me, "You're no good. Why did you say that? Someone is going to take it the wrong way. Why did you do 'it' (whatever 'it' maybe) that way? They're going to think you're crazy. You soooo don't fit in!" to go away, it might be easier to move forward and not question every word that comes out of my mouth on a given day. Of all the things I inherited from my dad, this constant self-doubt and internal working of the mind at all hours is something I'd gladly give back! It's allowed me to cry way too many tears and lose countless hours of sleep....sleep I desperately need!

If you need me today, I'll be working at remembering whose I am! (and comments are not necessary for this post...I'm sure I'll question having even put it out there as soon as it's posted!)

Remember Whose You Are

Remember Whose You Are

I don't know your story and you don't know mine, but we share a common theme. We are driven by the search for true identity, a desire to be understood and appreciated for who we are. We have longing to seek out something more. Those are not evil desires. God gave us the desire to seek the essence of who he created us to be, so that he can fulfill it. He created the thirst so we can enjoy the Living Water. Unfortunately, we spend a lot of time and energy looking everywhere else but to him for that fulfillment.

In Jeremiah 2 God paints a picture of how his people loved him like a bride loves her groom, full of passion and complete in their devotion to him. But their hearts changed. In Jeremiah 2:13 God says that his people have forsaken him, the spring of Living Water, and have dug their own cisterns. They are looking for fulfillment in all the wrong places. You can hear the Father's grieved heart as he lays out their behavior before them and then ends with "How's that working for you?"

My heart sinks as I see the areas in my life where I have chosen to find identity in my own cisterns, rather than drinking the Living Water. We too easily revert back to our own cisterns that can hold no water. Look at the cisterns in your life. What seemed like such a good source of legitimacy suddenly pales in comparison to true legitimacy found in God. That is why it is critical to meditate on the truths of who God is and who we are in Him until it sinks down deep into our spirit, soul, and body. John Calvin wrote in The Institutes Of The Christian Religion, "It now remains to pour into the heart itself what the mind has absorbed. For the Word of God is not received by faith if it fills the top of the brain, but when it takes root in the depth of the heart." Calvin is urging us to take deep drinks of the Living Water of who he is and what we have because of who he is:

He is Jehovah-Jireh (provider).
Genesis 22:14 Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide.
You can be sure he sees and knows your every need.
Matthew 6:8 Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

He is Jehovah-Rophe (healer).
Exodus 15:26 I am the LORD, who heals you.
You are being renewed.
Isaiah 40:31 ... those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength...

He is Jehovah-Shalom (peace).
Judges 6:24 ... and called it The LORD is Peace.
You have life and peace.
Romans 8:6 ... to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

He is Jehovah-Nissi (banner).
Exodus 17:15 Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is my Banner.
You are led in Christ's triumph.
2 Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ...

He is Jehovah-Rohi (shepherd).
Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd...
You are his well-tended sheep.
Psalm 100:3 We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

He is Jehovah-Tsidkenu (righteousness).
Jeremiah 23:6 This is the name by which he will be called: The LORD Our Righteousness.
You are free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:2 Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

He is Jehovah-Shammah (THE LORD IS THERE, Ezekiel 48:35)
Matthew 28:20 Surely I am with you always...
You are continually with God.
Psalm 73:23 Yet I am always with you...

Stop and allow these truths to sink deep into your spirit. You may "know" these Scriptural facts, but now really receive their truth deeply in your spirit where your legitimacy, identity, significance, and birthright are defined by God.

Remember whose you are... and who you are in him!

Thoughts about Salt

I love how God is gently breaking my heart day-by-day this week! I'm so thankful He's made me stop in the busyness and take time to actually read these devotionals as they have come across my in-box the last few days. The messages have put into plain terms what I've been needing to hear regarding certain situations that my family and I have been involved in over the last several months. May we all be salt!

Thoughts about Salt

Posted: 07 Mar 2010 12:01 AM PST

By Katherine Kehler

You are the salt of the earth. . .” Matthew 5:13

"Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, how will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another." Mark 9:50

After I read these verses during my Quiet Time one evening, I began to think about the reasons for salt being good thing.

1. Salt enhances the flavor of food,
2. Salt is used to preserve meat.
3. Salt is used to thaw ice.
4. Salt is a water softener.

So how can we apply these “salty” things to our lives because Jesus said we are the salt of the earth?

We can enhance our surroundings. For example our behavior must be based on Biblical values—integrity, truthfulness, peace, joy and love. Our yards and houses can set a standard of excellence and enhance the neighborhood.

We can preserve by being there to help neighbors, co-workers and family when they need someone to comfort them (be like a healing ointment). We can share the gospel
http://www.thoughts-about-god.com/4laws/law0.html with them so they can come to know the power of Christ within them.

We can melt icy relationships by being kind and loving to those around us even when they are cold to us. In time they will melt. Love never fails.

We can soften the world around us by smiling and being gentle and kind. We must make an effort to be friendly to all people—regardless of their race, religion, color, or lifestyle.

So, let me ask you, are you a salty Christian? Are you a nice person? Or have you lost it? You can become a salty Christian again by repenting and asking the Lord to be in control of your life http://www.thoughts-about-god.com/biblestudies/spiritfilledlife.htm once again. He will produce salt in your life.

Father, thank you that when you ask anything of us you will always provide the resources. We love you—enable us to love others like you do. Amen

Overcoming the World Step by Step

Overcoming the World Step by Step

I love how God knows exactly what I need to read or hear just when I need it the most. He's been doing a number on me lately, and what comfort He brought me in this little devotional this morning. I know we all have our own struggles, grief and heartache we experience on any given day. My prayer is that you will also find comfort in God's love and faithfulness, and that our spiritual growth and kindness towards others will only increase until His return. May it be soon!

missed.

(yes my eyes are closed, but i can't find the non-digital prints aaron got of my dad looking at me with more pride and love than i've ever known him to have. i'm so thankful for these photos and the man who took them. i know he'll be as wonderful a father to our boys as my dad was to us.)

(happy as can be flying the high skies)

(had i not met my dear, sweet hubby this photo would not exist. how grateful i am God's timing is and was more perfect than our own.)

some days are ones you never want to forget. some days are ones you wish you could always forget. today is one of the latter, but the man that passed to the other side on this day four years ago today will never be forgotten. he's greatly missed every time my children smile or accomplish a new task or beg to play airplanes or visit an airport. he's missed every time one of his own children hits another milestone. he's loved and remembered with honor. he helped shape us into the women and man my siblings and i are today, and i pray i will be even half the parent he was to me and them.
i miss you, daddy, with all my heart.
love, your little princess

baby's got a name (and other happenings)

Today was somewhat of a big day for us at the Dettling house. Noah started standing up (several times throughout the day) by himself and ENJOYED it! Baby's finally got a name....drum roll please......John Paul Dettling will be the 3rd edition to our little brood. And last but not least, James is sleeping in a 'BIG BOY' bed AND has hit the TERRIBLE 2's with a vengeance!!! Well, I didn't say they were all good...just big! :)

Sweet little Noah has been standing for a few weeks now, but as soon as he realized you let go he'd plop right down on his fanny. He decided the applause was worth it today and hung out just standing all around the house today! What else can a boy do on a rainy day (except for climb over some chairs, onto a table and hang by one arm from the pack n' play with a look of "um mom, HELP!") Did I mention he's a climber?!? :)

As for the name, it was actually picked out last year by Aaron when we were trying to name Noah. I had my heart set on Noah, and Aaron came around so we put John Paul on the backburner. Honestly, I had a hard time with it at first which I know sounds crazy. It's a beautiful name with deep, beautiful (Biblical) meaning but it also held some weird relations for me. I've moved past all those and love it now...especially when our 2 year old likes to say "ahn-paw" when you ask him "what's the baby's name?" So, John Paul it is!

So in a few months, the boys will be sharing a room (and many other mischievious acts, I'm sure!) I've given myself about 2 1/2 months with each transition so that by the time John Paul arrives, everyone will be sleeping (and hopefully have actually been sleeping) in their 'new' room for awhile. Of course, the baby will sleep in our room with us for a few months but I just want to make sure he's the only one waking up in the middle of the night. We've been blessed in the fact that both James and Noah are usually fantastic sleepers...until the recent switch to the 'big boy' bed (more stories to come on that at a later date!) I just hope the trasition remains relatively smooth. (As you can see, I'm up at 12:04am writing this post so sleep has been somewhat non-existent for me these days and I don't know if I can go on for an entire year this way!)

And finally, the "bad" news for our family, our nerves as parents, and the realization that our sweet baby James is a sinner just like the rest of us is his new "tude!" I might scream if I hear the words "NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO.............." one more time! It's breaking my heart! The "uh, uh, uh..." to ask for things and endless fountain of tears and shrills when he doesn't get his way are baffling and mind-numbing. This is the child who not 6 months ago was saying "please" and "thank you" before and after he asked for anything! I want that child back! Help, all you seasoned mommies! I'm at wit's end and have been reading every book, praying (constantly throughout the day), using time-outs, pats on the behind, taking things away...and then by advice of my counselor...even allowing him a little more freedom. I don't know what to do now! We're weary and I know it only gets harder from here! (And don't even get me started on the all-day obsession with the 'taggies' and 'sassy'...as our little angel calls them! They were just for bed, but he's beating me down. I never let them make it to the car if we're leaving the house--other than a long road trip--but it's all shrills and sincere panic if he decides he wants them during the day and I say the magic word..."NO!")

There are still good moments in our day, but he's definitely developed a knack for selective hearing. He can be sweet as pie one minute, especially when I ask him to help in some way with Noah. But the second he's "done" helping, the whining begins...and it's the type of whining without words, just grunts, pointing, tears and screams. If you have any advice, I'll gladly take it right now. Can't promise I'll follow it, but I'll definitely read it or hear it with an open mind and heart! :)
P.S. Please forgive all run-on sentences and choppy paragraphs. I'm exhausted and just wanted to try and get something up here since I made a promise to myself at the beginning of the year to post weekly, and it's already turned more into monthly! I still have so many pictures from the fall and Christmas to upload, but it will sadly have to be another day before I get around to that! Sweet dreams to all!
